About me? Hmmmmm? I am not perfect! I am not rich! I am not married! I am not skinny! I am not a whole bunch of things….but I am a loving mother, sister, friend, and daughter. I am spiritual, educated, thoughtful, creative, hard working, and blessed!
My name is Rachel Bourn, affectionately known as Ms. Rachel, 33 year old, single mother of five. I became a mother at the tender age of 14 and I have lived far from a perfect life. I have experienced everything from the death of a parent and a child to domestic violence and homelessness. My life has been a journey full of experiences and lessons that I feel compelled to share with the world. I have a heart for women and girls , all girls, but especially Black girls. I have been a black girl all my life and I can not speak from any other perspective. I know what it is like to live in a society where my skin is the first thing people notice, not how smart I am or how many letters are behind my name. Not only do I write from a personal point of view but I obtained degrees in Human Services and Social Work so I can develop my gift and use skill in advising others not just empathy.
This blog is a dream come true for me. I have kept journals since I was in the 2nd grade. I always wrote about the things going on in my life. At my lowest points, sometimes my journal was the only person I could talk to who I felt understood me. After going through so much and being depressed I realized that I did not go through all that pain for nothing and I was not alone. I want to reach as many people as I can, share my story, and inspire them to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I know first hand that life is not easy. Some of us are dealt cards and there is no way we deserve the things that have happened to us. Some of us have just flat out made choices that turned our world upside down and we don’t know how we can come back from it. I want to encourage, uplift, and inspire you to set goals and aim high! I want to let you know that even when you have a set back or something goes wrong you can bounce back and still accomplish your dreams! I want this blog to be a place where you can come and read some of my stories, get information, gain insight, ask questions and share your experiences with one another. So many times as females we are in competition with one another and we don’t think about what another girl may be going through. I want this blog to be a positive and inspirational place to come where you respect each other’s opinion even if it is different from your own.
My inspiration for my blog comes from Oprah Winfrey and Iyanla Vanzant. When I see them on TV I call them Auntie Oprah and Auntie Iyanla. lol. People laugh at me all the time but in my mind they are my Aunts. They are very wise, spiritual, and in tune with their purpose on this earth. I have learned so much from their teachings. They have shared their stories, how they have overcame their obstacles and they share their gift with the world. I know I do not know them personally and you do not know me but sometimes people don’t have to know you personally to impact your life in a special way. That is what I hope to be for you. Your sister girl who will not judge you, genuinely cares, will listen, offer advice, and share valuable life lessons with but still keep it real!
